I meet Kim Smith-Woodford on a rainy day at Euclid Creek Reservation east of Cleveland.  It’s a big wooded area, with a trail lining the creek and shelters for birthday parties.

The park is an urban oasis – where folks from all backgrounds go for exercise or a picnic.  And it means a lot to Smith-Woodford.  It’s where she became more interested in the outdoors.

Update 9/12/2017: The  City of Toledo has moved its water quality dashboard back to clear.

For a city on Lake Erie, it's the season for monitoring toxic algae blooms -- and drinking water.

Toledo Ohio know how dangerous the blooms can be. In 2014, toxins contaminated its water supply, forcing a "do not drink or boil” advisory for two days.

U.S. Coast Guard

Over the past two weeks, 22 boats in the Chicago area have been ordered to cease operation due to illegal charter service.  This discovery was part of a 39-boat search by the U.S. Coast Guard and the Illinois Department of Natural Resources (IDNR).

IDNR issued 14 misdemeanor charges, including obstruction of justice.  The Coast Guard issued several Notice of Violation citations – which totaled more than $50,000 according to a statement from the Coast Guard Ninth District.

Gray wolves in the Great Lakes region should keep their spot on the endangered species list, the U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals in Washington, D.C., ruled Tuesday.

New York's governor has ordered an investigation into the ugly, smelly black blob that fouled the Niagara River, a short distance from the world-famous falls.

The Niagara Falls, N.Y., water board says the mess -- which extended along the Maid of the Mist tour boat dock -- was created by weekend discharges from the local wastewater treatment plant. And it said those discharges were within limits set by the state.
