A federal judge has ordered the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to take action on Ohio’s 2016 list of impaired waters within 30 days.

In his 25-page order, Judge James Carr criticizes both the Ohio EPA and its federal counterpart for refusing to comply with several parts of the Clean Water Act.

The Ohio Environmental Protection Agency has decided to include Western Lake Erie in a list of impaired waters, due to the harmful algae blooms that plague the region every year.  The agency’s move comes after years of calls from environmentalists and a federal lawsuit. 


Over 100 advocates for the Great Lakes are in Washington D.C. this week, lobbying Congress to continue its bipartisan support on issues including pollution clean-up and drinking water protection.

This year’s Great Lakes Day is similar to last year’s – it has a lot to do with making sure the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative receives full funding - $300 million a year.  Trump’s latest budget proposal cuts that number down to $30 million.
