Video: Threat to Great Lakes funding a concern

Mar 7, 2017

Concerns about the Great Lakes continue to dominate the news, from a leaked list of EPA budget cuts to a cautious message from an Ohio scientist. This week, a Republican congressman from Ohio and a scientist with Ohio Sea Grant agreed on the importance of continuing to fund the Great Lakes cleanup.

Congressman Dave Joyce talks to Ideas host Rick Jackson.

Rep. Dave Joyce (R-OH) spoke on Monday's WVIZ/PBS program Ideas to talk about the threat to Great Lakes funding.

In an interview with Ideas host Rick Jackson, Joyce pledged to fight any cut in funding for the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative. "At the end of the day we're going to be able to get back to a serious level of funding," he said.

Tuesday, WCPN program The Sound of Ideas focused  on the future of the Great Lakes, speaking with Dr. Jeffrey Reutter (Ohio Sea Grant and Stone Lab), Todd Ambs (Healing our Waters - Great Lakes Coalition), and James McCarty (The Plain Dealer).

In that conversation Reutter warned of a return to the past, when the Great Lakes were polluted and un-regulated.  "Without a strong EPA, NOAA, Sea Grant program, I'm concerned that we're headed back in that direction," he said.
